OpenVPN Connect is the “official” application from OpenVPN Inc. and is intended to be more user-friendly VPN users with minimal technical experience. It is therefore less fully feature-rich than the openvpn android app that is targeted at more advanced OpenVPN users.

Openvpn for Android Openvpn for Android, a free and open-source application developed by Arne Schwarzbe, enables you to connect with any VPN service that uses the OpenVPN protocol. If your device isn’t compatible the pre-configured VPN applications available on the Google Play Store, this is a great alternative. The setup process is quite simple. You’ll need to download the VPN profile files. (The config files are named.ovpn). They can be downloaded from your VPN provider’s site or via live chat support.

After you’ve imported a profile, just tap one of the servers in the list to connect to that one. Once connected it will ensure that all Internet traffic is routed through a secure tunnel and sent to the server chosen by the application. You can check your connection’s status and details in the Status tab. A kill switch is always enabled by default and will block your Internet connections when the VPN tunnel is lost.

The app also provides per-app VPN as well as an all-day-long feature that automatically begins an VPN connection when the app is in use and continues to run even after your device goes to sleep or switches networks. The latter however requires Android 7.0 or higher and can drain your battery more than normal.
